Thoreau tells us, “Thought is the sculptor that can create the person you want to be.”
This philosophy has been the foundation of my teaching, writing and counseling over the years, and I’ve related it to students and clients alike through my metaphor of the “snowman” as expressed below:
THOUGHTS: Our thoughts and ideas are the architects of our lives. Those operative beliefs generate our behaviors. Simply stated, our flow from what we THINK.
BEHAVIORS: Behaviors are not the beginning point of our challenges. While we generally focus upon what we are doing that needs to change, I believe that constructive change begins in our core beliefs and values (THOUGHTS).
FEELINGS: Our emotions are the by-product of our actions, which in turn flow from our thoughts. More positive emotion, therefore, will be the result of clearer, healthier thought patterns.
